Hear Lectures, TV and Movies More Clearly

A Songbird of Paradise: Enhancing Your Ability to Hear

It's a known fact: as we age, so does our ability to hear things clearly. Sorry "boomers," but that's a fact of life. Fortunately there are ways for those heading into their second half century to enhance their hearing abilities.

The Songbird Clear Sound Enhancement Device ($120) from Songbird Hearing Inc. is a small appliance that will help you hear what you're missing, whether it's used to hear a lecture more clearly or to enhance the sound in a movie theater or on TV.

Now, this is not a conventional hearing aid. Songbird makes those, too, and they can be directly ordered through the company. These devices don't require a hearing exam or a professional fitting. This is, instead, a personal sound amplification device (PSAD) that can make soft sounds louder while reducing the intensity of loud sounds. Hence, you hear the soft sounds more clearly.

We were able to put the device through its paces by using it in various environments, ranging from concert halls to living rooms, and did notice a difference in the clarity of the sound. It also allowed us to lower the volume on some of our favorite TV shows, which delighted those around us.

A few of its key features include:

  •  It's virtually invisible and discreet to wear. The device fits behind the ear, where no one can see it.
  •  It comes with an adjustable cord and soft tip that make it more comfortable to wear.
  •  It's easy to use. Just insert the battery and turn it on.
  •  It's based on technology developed by Texas Instruments and the Sarnoff Corp.

Check out the company's website at for more information.
