Two manufacturers of quality turntables want to give you a link to the past by making it easy for you to convert those old, dusty vinyl records to digital files.

American Audio and Audio-Technica, both well known to audiophiles and DJs, have hit the market with turntables that will have you spinning and grinning as you effortlessly preserve those old recordings and store them on your computer or other device.

The TT Record from American Audio ($279.95) is the easiest to use of the duo. It records directly to an SD card, which means you don't need to have it connected to your computer or any other device.

There's also no software to install or learn. Simply insert the SD card into the memory card slot on your computer, boot up Microsoft Media Center or Real Player and - - - voila - - - you're back in the past. Or you can insert the card into the memory card slot on your MP3 player (sorry iPodittes, it only records MP3 files).

Other key features include:

The Audio-Technica AT-LP2D-USB recording system ($229) is a bit more sophisticated and connects directly to the USB port on your computer.

The LP2D uses Cakewalk software to convert your records to digital files, which means there's a bit of a learning curve here. But, as with all Cakewalk products, the software is very easy to use and you'll be recording your old tunes in a matter of minutes.

Once the turntable is connected, you just play your records and they're transformed into digital audio files and stored on your PC. It also records to several digital formats - - - MP3, WMA, WAV, etc - - - and comes with Cakewalk and Pyro3 for PCs and Audacity for Macs.
