The 16th Annual Bermie Awards

Our judges have spoken!

The accounting firm of Me, Myself & I has delivered the sealed envelopes!

The lights have dimmed!

And anticipation is in the air!!!!!

It's that time of year again, when we bestow the Bermie Awards on several unsuspecting recipients (can we turn up the lights so I can read these things?).

Most Maligned New Product of the Year: Microsoft Windows 8. All of the hype over this new operating system has been overshadowed by squeaks and squawks from folks that seem to be resistant to change. We've tried it. We like it. Case closed!

The Apple a Day Award: The folks at Apple introduced three new mobile computing gotta-have-its during 2012 - - - the iPad 4, iPad Mini (a seven-inch tablet) and the iPhone 5 along with upgrades to their line of ultra-thin, ultra-light computers. What they didn't tell you is that you can get many of the great new software enhancements by simply upgrading the operating system on your old device. Truthfully, the hardware changes were minimal.

Say Good-bye to Privacy Award: Facebook wins this one, hands down. The ways this social media goliath can invade your privacy are so numerous, it defies even George Orwell's depiction of a controlled society. Now, Facebook users can call you, track you, graph you and even target dumb ads at you. This has come a long way from the posting of stupid cat tricks and recipes.

The Phantom 4G Award: Wireless companies like Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon keep claiming they have the widest, largest and most efficient 4G networks. But do they??? In reality, none of them offer country-wide 4G service and our wireless provider can't seem to find Danbury on a map!

There's an App for that Award: There are thousands of iPhone, iPad and Android apps floating in cyberspace, just waiting for you to find them. Unfortunately, most of them are useless wastes of space and time. For example, did you know there are several apps that will help you find your phone??? Works really well, especially if its installed on the phone you lost!

The Are they Dead Yet Award: We keep reading about the financial difficulties and demise of RIM, the makers of the once-uberpopular Blackberry devices. But this Canadian behemoth refuses to cooperate and die peacefully, continuing to release new mobile devices and upgrade its older devices.

The Dearth of New Software Award: This one goes to all of the software companies that seem content with just upgrading old products rather than releasing something new and exciting. It's been awhile since we've seen a software product that screams BUY ME.

That's all folks!
