Software could help extract tip-of-the-tongue words

By MIKE BERMAN

Ever been at a loss for words? You sit staring at the one-eyed monster on your desk trying to find just the right word to get your point across, but it never quite makes it from your little grey cells to your keyboard.

This, unfortunately, happens to most of us a lot more than we care to admit. But there's help on the horizon.

The Write Brothers have launched a new tool for those of us that are vocabulary deficient called Word Menu ($34.95) that guides you through the process of finding the correct word, whether you're working on the great American novel or just trying to solve the Sunday New York Times Crossword Puzzle.

Stephen Glazier spent eight years of his short life (he died when he was 44) putting together this valuable tool, organizing more than 75,000 words by subject matter. The result was a comprehensive reference utility that makes it easier to find and use the right words in their proper context.

But, as with everything innovative and useful, there has to be a downside, right?

The one thing this program lacks is the ability to link with word processors such as Microsoft Word or Corel WordPerfect. Just think how much more valuable it would be if we could be stumbling through our latest treatise and be able to link to Word Menu within the document to find what we need. But, alas, we are forced to call up the program separately, navigate through it and then return to our document.

Obviously, this is a small price to pay and the program's strong points far outweigh the inconvenience.

Among its key features:

  • You can click on topics or subtopics to drill down to the appropriate word list.
  • A Split Results view allows you to see the words at the top and definitions at the bottom of the screen.
  • A fractal browser gives the visually oriented wordsmith a graphics based tool to search for the correct word.
  • The program's search tool allows you to find words by topic, definition, category or related material.
  • The program also features a reverse dictionary, nearly 800 glossaries, and an almanac (with everything from holidays to sports).

More information on Word Menu and other Write Brothers products can be found at www.wordmenu.com.

Profits or Bust
How will the economic downturn affect your purchasing decisions when it comes to tech toys?

I will cut back on purchases.
I will only buy what I need.
I will be reluctant to upgrade what I have.
I will only pay cash for new tech toys.
It won't affect my purchasing decisions.
What economic downturn?
