Freedom from the shackles of music servers

Slim Devices Squeezebox streams music to every room in your house

By MIKE BERMAN

Music, music, everywhere ... well, you know how it goes. Except now we find ourselves in the new, wonderful world of digital music servers, which allow you to "record" your favorite tunes on built-in hard drives and play them at the click of a button.

But, as with all things of this type, you're limited to the capacity of the hard drives in the servers, which is a big drawback for those of us that have been building our collections since the dawn of time.

But fear not, fellow audiophiles: The folks at Slim Devices have found a way to deliver music only limited by the vastness of the Internet to every room where you have a sound system.

The new Squeezebox ($249 for wired and $299 for wireless) uses your computer to not only access whatever music you have stored on its hard drive, but can also access Internet Radio stations and other music sources to free you from the shackles of other music servers.

The wireless unit I played with was very easy to set up. I just installed the free software that came with the device on my PC and attached the Sqeezebox to my sound system. The unit walked me through everything I needed to connect to my PC, including setting up access to my wireless network.

Other key features include:

  • 24-bit Burr Brown DAC, which delivers superior sound.
  • 802.11g high-speed wireless support plus an ether net port which allows you to add other devices to your network.
  • Support for MP3, WMA, FLAC, AAC, WAV and Ogg Vorbis audio formats.
  • You can expand music to every room where you have a sound system by installing additional Squeezeboxes.
  • It displays animations that move to the beat of the music.
  • You can browse through thousands of tunes in seconds using either the remote control that comes with the unit, your cell phone or even a Sony PSP. You can even use the Web browser on your PC.
  • A vacuum fluorescent display allows you to see what's playing.

Profits or Bust
How will the economic downturn affect your purchasing decisions when it comes to tech toys?

I will cut back on purchases.
I will only buy what I need.
I will be reluctant to upgrade what I have.
I will only pay cash for new tech toys.
It won't affect my purchasing decisions.
What economic downturn?
