The virtues of an iPod, but without the earbuds

New headphones from Macally, JVC and eDimensional Inc. enhance your listening pleasure

OK, it's time to determine who you really are:

Are you one of those iPodites who is satisfied listening to your music through wimpy, annoying earbuds? Or will only the booming, head-banging sounds emanating from big, pulsating headphones satisfy you?

Well, now even those of us that have become engulfed by the iPod generation can have our music and hear it, too!

Macally mTUNE-N

Macally, a company that always seems one step ahead when it comes to filling a need for "different" audio accessories, has hit the market with their new mTUNE-N wireless headphones ($49.95) aimed specifically at iPod users.

So what makes them different? These cushioned, full-sized headphones, made specifically for the iPod Nano, don't need batteries and have a built-in slot that turns your Nano into a cordless MP3 headset.

Other features include:

  • A 3.5mm jack so you can attach them to a computer or any other music device.
  • Leather, hygienic ear pads.
  • Full access to the Nano's click wheel and display.
  • Collapsible design for easy storage.

JVC HANC100 Noise Canceling Headphone

And for those of you that don't want to run around town with an iPod protruding from your headphones, there's the new HANC100 Noise Canceling Headphone ($79.95) from JVC.

When activated, these headphones block out up to 75 percent of all background noise while delivering pure, unadulterated sound to an audiophiles ears. Also its retractable cord and its foldability make it one of the most portable headsets I've had a chance to play with.

In addition:

  • It comes with an airline adapter and pouch.
  • It can be used with any audio device, from full-sized stereo rigs to mini audio devices.
  • In passive mode (with noise canceling turned off) it produces a full range of dynamic sound worth of any home stereo system.
  • You can get up to 50 hours of use from one AAA battery.

eDimensional Audio FX Force Feedback

Finally, and I've saved the best for last, is the Audio FX Force Feedback gaming headset ($49.95) from eDimensional Inc.

These audio monsters deliver a full spectrum of sound, including vibrations from sounds we can't even hear. Basically these headphones are built to deliver three dimensions of sound, making sound effects from your favorite games more realistic and delivering full, crisp home-theater rivaling audio.

The key here is the unit's built-in subwoofer and "advanced transducers," which deliver vibrations below 20Hz and immerse you into a world of sound you may have never experienced from your computer.

Key features include:

  • Positional audio, which means sounds coming from the right will be louder than those on the left and vice versa.
  • Its bass-boosting technology allows you to "feel" the game.
  • A noise-canceling microphone to use while taunting your enemies on line or for use with any voice recognition system.
  • LED meters on both sides so those around you know you're immersed in a high-intensity gaming or audio experience.

More information on any of these headphones can be found at www.macally.com, www.jvc.com and www.edimensional.com.
